Hey so im just wondering if being LGBTQ is ok here?

27:27
Norma Garza, Community Engagement and Multicultural Outreach. Thank you for being here!

27:45
Housing is too expensive in Austin

27:57
Everyone welcome in this space, JK!

28:08
Jennifer Klassen, community member and my partner is a teacher at an AISD high school

28:16
@John, all are welcome here.

28:31
Ok thanks sm guys!

29:04
i think we should get the homeless people houses, it is sad to see the amount of homeless people here

31:29
I just want to make sure that poll that we did that only gave us 10 seconds to vote isn’t used as polling staff about their opinion about this matter.

32:05
Thank you, Gracie and Kynan.

32:33
Hi Gracie and Kynan! It is definitely not. We will have a survey, link will be shared at the end of the meeting, and we will also have breakout groups later to discuss.

32:53
Ok thank you.

36:42
As long as I know, you are not recruiting from Mexico, that would be a Good spot to look at, instead of looking at Spain.

37:03
Feel free to share questions in the chat or use the raise hand function. We will have a Q&A opportunity shortly.

37:16
@jeffry don, we have folks on mute, are you able to put your question in the chat?

38:59
Why are we calling this teacher housing when classified workers are making poverty wages in our district. The district will say “teacher” is the general word when talking about staff but I want to know that classified workers will get access to affordable housing. Just as much as we have a teacher shortage we have a huge classified shortage (especially TA) and that’s because classified workers make a financial sacrifice to work for our district.

39:12
Other districts are offering higher base pay, not housing. Why is housing the lever the district feels is best?

39:20
We have only been talking about teachers. We constantly forget about classified workers.

39:40
Good question, Candace!

39:56
@Gracie, the state doesn't allow districts to include other job classifications in the teacher housing bond. however, we would work to leverage the bond dollars to create housing for other positions too

40:05
Classified staff really have it rough.

41:01
What is the proposed requirement for applying for teacher housing? Will teachers need to be employed by AISD? What is a teacher loses their job or quits their job?

41:46
Housing is not the chief reason given by former teachers as to why they leave. It’s campus climate, workload, and support. How will housing support those areas?

41:54
@candace, it's not either/or, the district is working to bring teacher pay to a more competitive rate, teachers and our lowest wage workers were the only staff to receive raises this year in an effort to put all available dollars where they are needed most. Teacher housing would be an added incentive paid for with bond funding, if approved

42:23
What district owned land is likely to get this housing, if approved?

42:31
^^

43:29
@Ali can you explain how if we can only use bond money for teacher housing, what does it mean we would leverage bond dollars for other employee housing? How does that work can someone explain that piece of it?

45:08
@Eric we'll be going into our Q&A in just a moment and that's the first thing we will address

48:37
How will teachers be prioritized for the limited units? What would the contract look like for the housing? Teachers are worried about the stipulations of living in company housing.

49:10
I am so glad the district is considering this now. For years I've seen teachers start there careers here in our inner-city schools who move out to other districts once they get married and start their families.

49:25
*their careers

49:34
What is the rationale for $50M? We first heard that the idea was 50 units, then we heard 200 units, then 300 units, now the presentation is saying 500-1000. I am curious why this is the amount we’re proposing

50:07

50:24
@Ali in this bond it is not either or it is only housing with no pay increase guaranteed. We are nearly $10K behind.

50:46
Three years to complete the first project? Or to spend the whole $50 million plus what you leveraged?

51:55
As a reminder, we will be switching into breakout rooms later in the meeting. If you would like to participate in a Spanish breakout group, please let us know in the chat | Como recordatorio, cambiaremos a las salas de grupos más adelante en la reunión.

52:14
I love that you brought that up Mary! How will this housing compete with or replace the “investment vehicle” mindset of housing that most families use when making long term life decisions? Will this help offset teachers moving to Round Rock or Elgin to raise their families? This is only for renting units, correct?

52:24
@candance, I hear you. If we could pay teachers raises out of bond funds, I have no doubt that would be priority number one

52:42

54:29
The issue with company housing is that there is huge risk of abuse. When your housing is dependent on your employee status, please are afraid to lose their jobs and will struggle with abuse

54:50
As in at their work places which is a huge problem and teachers are worried about this

55:08

55:09
Legally, does the bond money have to be for physically making housing? Specifically, are there options like using some of it for vouchers?

55:25
Gracias Karla Rivera.

55:48
Are bonds legally for buildings and infrastructure only?

57:58
@JJ, Examples of things bonds can pay for: Modernized or renovated schoolsUpgraded academic, athletic and fine arts spacesMajor repairs like HVAC, plumbing, roofing, etc.Technology upgradesSchool bussesSafety and security upgradesTeacher housing

57:58
When is the deadline for deciding this to be on the bond or not?

57:59
I’m sad that Austin ISD has not earned the trust you’re asking for. There has to be at least a general plan for many folks.

58:55
What bonds can’t pay for: Staff salaries,Staff raises,Utility costs (electric, gas, water, etc.),Consumables (paper, art supplies, etc),Certain vehicle purchases,

01:01:38
In terms of sites; Is there an area, location or region the district has in mind?

01:01:40
@Gracie the Board will vote on Bond proposals next week, tentatively on Tuesday the 9th

01:02:31
AISD can access the Project Connect displacement money, right? Either for more detailed planning or for construction on at least some of your sites? Also outside of recapture?

01:02:33
As a reminder, we will be switching into breakout rooms later in the meeting. If you would like to participate in a Spanish breakout group, please let us know in the chat | Como recordatorio, cambiaremos a las salas de grupos más adelante en la reunión.

01:02:41
Good question Eric

01:02:48
What other district in Texas are doing Teacher Housing?

01:03:06
I will have to sign off in just a few minutes. Thank you for sharing this information?

01:03:29
Thanks for joining Mary! Look forward to a follow up email with resources and survey links from me tomorrow.

01:06:25
thanks for that explanation

01:06:51
Alamo Drafthouse and Loyola strike 1&2. Equity by design started with the communities.

01:07:31
Loyola was the case where a teacher making 50K didn’t make enough

01:07:54
I have to step out to a meeting but I appreciate the opportunities to give feedback. This plan is too rushed.
